Living, studying and working as partner of a diplomat in the USA, Canada and Chile for 7 years, has taught me the importance of cultural adaption. Often we think that general knowledge of other cultures and good intentions are enough to successfully create a life and do business abroad. I've found this not to be the case. To effectively operate in a culture that is different from our own requires more. It requires specific knowledge of the cultures we're engaging with, it requires knowledge of our own cultural background and it requires the ability to shift our cultural perspective from time to time. Like putting on a different pair of glasses.
Over the past years I've been coaching expats in the process of finding solutions for mainly communicational challenges they face in the countries they're assigned to. Helping them to overcome culture shock, successfully interpret peoples's behavior and create awareness about their own patterns of behavior and cultural bias. Recently, I also started to train and consult expats on a cultural level for settling in Chile and The Netherlands. Improving their cultural agility and securing a 'soft landing'.
Expat life can be a beautiful and enriching experience. But it can be challenging as well. When we feel overwhelmed by cultural differences and are realizing that our communication tools don't quite work that well anymore we might get irritated, frustrated and perhaps even experience anxiety. But there are solutions to overcome that and make the process of expatriation easier!
Let me help you make the most of your expat experience by unleashing your intercultural potential and by developing a true cross-cultural mindset!
